By the 19th century the medieval system of financing the Church through tithes, surrendering a tenth of all agricultural produce, was in desperate need of reform. The Act replacing the requirement to pay in kind with a cash payment involved a detailed survey of each parish.
The resulting 1838 tithe map for Mortlake showed the owner, occupier and land use of every field in the parish.
