William Lewis Turner

Between 1893 and 1903 John Eustace Anderson, clerk and solicitor to Barnes Urban District Council and local historian, had been collecting and commissioning drawings of Mortlake by Albert Betts. The last of these was made in December 1903. Anderson then commissioned around 80 drawings from William Lewis Turner between 1903 and 1905.

Lewis Turner was born in Llandaff, Glamorgan in 1864 and married Ada in 1888. In 1891 he was living in Putney, describing himself as a cycle manufacturer. By 1901 he was living at 35 St Leonards Road, Mortlake. He now described himself as an artist "on own account" and working from home.

In 1905 Lewis Turner moved to St Margaret's, Twickenham. In the 1911 census he describes himself as a painter and etcher, again working "on own account" and from home. There is a gap in his Mortlake drawings between 1905 and 1911 but then he made another 11 drawings of Mortlake.

William Lewis and Ada had four children by 1911. He probably died in 1920 or 1921, still living in Twickenham.
