Whitworth Arms

This old Mortlake beer house stood on the north side of the High Street. The photograph shows Mortlake High Street in around 1900 with the Whitworth Arms building at No. 93 partially obscured by the Queen's Head sign.

The 1871 Census describes Joseph Beecham as the beer retailer living at the Whitworth Arms with his wife Maria. William Smith, a grocer's clerk, was their lodger. The 1881 Census describes James Lucas, originally from Shropshire, as the licenced victualler who lived on the premises with his wife Mary and their three young children Henry, Elizabeth and baby James.

In the 1914 Valuation there is no mention of the pub, but the building at 93 High Street was described as an old three storey brick-built basement house and shop. The shop, with a second room and a scullery were on the ground floor; there were two rooms on the first floor and a further three rooms in the attic. The basement also had two rooms, and the wc was in the yard.
