Five Alls |
The Five Alls beerhouse stood on the south side of the Upper Richmond Road between Sheen Gate Gardens and Penrhyn Crescent on a part of the Cedars estate owned by Leycester Penryhn. The old beerhouse was replaced by five cottages. In the 1914 Valuation the cottages were all described as having two or three rooms on the upper floor and two further rooms on the ground floor along with a scullery.
In an interview given to The Herald in August 1934, Mrs Sharpe, who had lived at No.5 Five Alls for the past 50 years, recalled that before the cottages were built, the site was occupied by a large beerhouse called the Five Alls. It was because of this that the cottages were also called the Five Alls. In October 1934 these five cottages were demolished and in 1935 the site was occupied by South London Motors Ltd.
The name "Five Alls" is usually associated with inn signs showing five characters:
I Pray for All - a clergyman
I Plead for All - a barrister
I Maintain All - a farmer
I Fight for All - a king
I Take All - the devil
There are several pubs called the Five Alls in the country with differing versions of the five characters.
