Uplands

Uplands was built in the 1850s on one of the plots sold off from Swannell's farm. In 1853 Sir Henry Taylor, a civil servant in the Colonial Office, dramatic poet and author of Philip van Artevelde, moved to Uplands. He had lived at Leyden House, Thames Bank, since 1844 but moved to benefit the health of his children.

On 5 September 1862 Charles Dodgson (ie Lewis Carroll) visited the Taylors at Uplands, where he photographed various members of the family. This photograph shows Henry's son, Harry, outside the front entrance of Uplands. It sold at auction in 2016 for £3,750.
