Oakdene

Oakdene, overlooking Sheen Common, was designed for James Gandy in 1884 by Thomas Edward Collcutt. The drawing opposite was exhibited at the Royal Academy. Collcutt, who lived at Sandfields on Upper Richmond Road, was one of the major exponents of the Arts and Crafts Movement in architecture. In London examples of his work are the Palace Theatre, the Savoy Hotel, Lloyds Register of Shipping and the Imperial Institute. He was President of the Royal Institute of British Architects from 1906 to 1908. Oakdene survives today as 105 Christ Church Road.
