Observatory House

Observatory House

Rev. William Pearson, the founder of Temple Grove School, built Observatory House for his own residence in the grounds of the school. Pearson was an expert on astronomy and scientific instruments and was co-founder of the Royal Astronomical Society. This photograph from 1907 shows the house's observatory. The dome moved on ebony rollers to all vantage points.

The house was demolished and Colston Cottages, replacements for Colston Almshouses on Milestone Green, were built on the site. The stable block survives as 11 Well Lane.
